How to Build a College List That Actually Fits You

How to Build a College List That Actually Fits You

Creating your college soccer recruiting list isn’t about chasing the big names or following where your teammates are going. It’s about finding programs where you’ll thrive both on the field and in the classroom for four years.

Most players make the mistake of creating dream lists without being realistic about their abilities or what they actually want from their college experience.

Here’s how to build a list that sets you up for success.

Start With Honest Self-Assessment

Before you research a single program, take a hard look in the mirror. Are you genuinely a D1 prospect, or would you be better suited for D2 or D3?

This isn’t about crushing dreams—it’s about finding the right level where you’ll get meaningful playing time and develop as a player.

Consider your club team’s level, your role on that team, and feedback from coaches who know college soccer.

If you’re riding the bench on a mid-tier club team, D1 might not be realistic. But D2, D3, NAIA, or junior college could offer incredible opportunities.

Remember: it’s better to be a key contributor at a D2 program than to warm the bench at a D1 school.

Match Your Academic Profile

College soccer recruiting success depends heavily on NCAA eligibility and academic fit. Check each program’s average GPA and test score ranges. If your 3.2 GPA doesn’t align with a school requiring a 3.8 average, you’re wasting time and application fees.

As a general benchmark, aim to maintain at least a 3.5 GPA to keep most college options open. For Ivy League and other highly academic programs, you’ll typically need a 3.7+ GPA to be competitive, even as a recruited athlete.

Think Beyond Soccer

You’ll spend more time as a student than as a player, so campus culture matters enormously. Do you thrive in small, tight-knit communities or prefer the energy of large universities? Can you handle cold winters, or do you need year-round sunshine?

Visit campuses when possible, even if just for ID camps. The “feel” of a place often tells you everything you need to know about fit.

Research Coaching Philosophy and Program Culture

Not all soccer programs are created equal. Some coaches emphasize possession-based play, others prefer direct, physical styles. Some prioritize team chemistry, while others focus purely on individual talent.

The best way to learn their style is to watch their games on YouTube. And, following their Instagram can give you a quick glimpse into their culture. The combo of these will give you a good feel for what the program is about.

Analyze Playing Time Opportunities

Study team rosters carefully. How many players are in your position? What are their class years? Starters typically play 70+ minutes per game—are those spots realistically available during your time at the school?

A program graduating three seniors in your position offers better opportunities than one with two freshmen starters ahead of you.

Create a Balanced List

Build your list across three categories:

  • Dream List (20% of your list): Programs slightly above your current level where everything would need to align perfectly—your reach schools that would be incredible if they worked out.
  • List to Consider (60% of your list): Programs that match your athletic and academic profile well. These are your target schools where you have a realistic chance of earning a roster spot and contributing.
  • Safety List (20% of your list): Programs where you’d likely earn a roster spot and potentially significant playing time immediately. Don’t overlook these—they often provide the best overall college experience.

Quality Over Quantity

Focus on 15-20 programs maximum. It’s better to thoroughly research and genuinely connect with fewer coaches than to send generic emails to 50 programs.

The college soccer recruiting process rewards players who do their homework and find genuine fits, not those who spray and pray.
