What Happens If You Don’t Get a Scholarship Offer?
You’ve attended ID camps, created highlight videos, and reached out to dozens of college coaches. But the scholarship offers aren’t coming.
Before you panic, understand this: most college soccer players don’t receive full scholarships—and many don’t get athletic scholarships at all!
☝️ This is just the nature of our sport.
Here’s what you need to know about your options when scholarship offers don’t materialize.
The Reality of College Soccer Scholarships
Only about 2% of high school soccer players receive Division I scholarships.
Starting in 2025-26, new NCAA rules dramatically change the landscape. Division I men’s and women’s soccer programs can now offer up to 28 scholarships each (up from 9.9 for men and 14 for women), with a maximum roster limit of 28 players.
However, schools aren’t required to fully fund these scholarships, and many programs will offer fewer due to budget constraints.
Division II offers fewer scholarships, and Division III doesn’t provide athletic scholarships at all.
Yet thousands of players compete successfully at these levels every year.
Your Alternative Pathways
Walk-On Opportunities
Walk-on opportunities are becoming more limited under the new NCAA rules. With new roster caps of 28 players and the elimination of scholarship limits, many programs will need to be more selective about roster spots. However, opportunities still exist, especially at programs that don’t fully fund their scholarships.
Contact coaches directly about walk-on opportunities. Many programs still hold tryouts, though competition will be fiercer with smaller rosters.
Academic and Merit-Based Aid
Don’t overlook academic scholarships and financial aid. A strong GPA and test scores can provide more funding than athletic scholarships. Many soccer players combine small athletic scholarships with academic aid to reduce costs significantly.
Division III schools often offer generous academic aid packages that can make them more affordable than Division I programs with partial athletic scholarships.
Junior College Route
Junior colleges offer a proven pathway to four-year programs. You can develop your skills, improve NCAA eligibility requirements, and catch the attention of college recruiters. Many current Division I players started at junior colleges.
NJCAA soccer programs provide competitive environments with opportunities for athletic scholarships and academic transfer credits.
Club and Intramural Soccer
University club teams compete at high levels without the time demands of varsity programs. Many clubs travel nationally and provide excellent soccer experiences while allowing you to focus on academics.
Some students prefer intramural soccer for its social aspects and lower commitment level.
Making the Most of Your Situation
Stay Academically Eligible
Maintain NCAA eligibility standards even without scholarship offers. Requirements include minimum GPA, core course completion, and standardized test scores. You never know when opportunities might arise.
Continue Training
Keep developing your skills through club teams, personal training, or local leagues. College coaches sometimes recruit players who continue improving after high school.
Network Strategically
Stay connected with your high school coach and club coaches. They often hear about openings and can recommend you for last-minute opportunities.
The Bottom Line
Not receiving a scholarship offer doesn’t end your college soccer dreams. Many successful players found different paths to continue playing while earning their degrees. Focus on finding the right academic and athletic fit for your goals.
The college recruiting process is unpredictable, but your soccer journey doesn’t have to end in high school. Explore all your options, stay persistent, and remember that the best college experience isn’t always at the school with the biggest scholarship offer!
Just remember, there’s life after soccer. In most cases, your education is your the gateway to a successful future.
