How to Make a Soccer Highlight Video That Coaches Will Actually Watch
College soccer recruiting has become increasingly competitive, and a well-crafted highlight video can be the difference between getting noticed and getting overlooked.
As someone who’s guided other players through this process, I’ve seen what works—and what doesn’t!
Here are my top tips…
Start Strong: Your First 30 Seconds Matter Most
Coaches receive dozens of highlight videos weekly. Most make their decision within the first 30 seconds.
Always lead with your absolute best clips—that perfectly weighted through ball, the diving save, or the clinical finish. Don’t build up to your highlights; start with them.
Here’s what many families miss: coaches aren’t watching for entertainment. They’re evaluating specific skills for their system. A flashy bicycle kick might look impressive, but consistent first touches and smart decision-making under pressure tell a better story.
Include Essential Information Up Front
Start with a clean intro slide containing:
- Full name and graduation year
- Primary and secondary positions
- Current club team and high school
- Contact information (email and phone)
- Basic stats (height, GPA if strong)
Keep the design simple and professional. Avoid flashy graphics that take attention away from your play.
Keep It Short and Focused
Your highlight video should be 3-5 minutes maximum. Quality trumps quantity every time. I’ve seen 10-minute videos where the best moments were buried in the middle—by then, the coach has already moved on to their lunch.
Focus on clips that showcase your position’s key attributes.
- Defenders should emphasize clean tackles, aerial duels, and distribution.
- Midfielders need to show vision, passing range, and work rate.
- Forwards should highlight finishing, movement, and hold-up play.
Make Yourself Easy to Identify
This seems obvious, but you’d be surprised how many videos leave coaches guessing which player they’re supposed to evaluate.
Use a simple arrow, circle, or spotlight effect before each clip.
Some editing apps make this surprisingly easy—even basic smartphone apps offer these features now.
Music: Keep It Clean and Energetic
Adding music can enhance the emotional impact of your highlights. Stick to upbeat, instrumental hip-hop tracks that are copyright-free.
Avoid anything with explicit lyrics—remember, coaches and college admissions staff will be watching. The music should complement your play, not overshadow it.
Keep the volume at a level where it adds energy without being distracting. Many successful highlight videos use tracks that build momentum throughout, matching the flow of your best moments.
Technical Tips for Better Results
Film from an elevated position when possible—sideline footage from ground level makes it harder to see field vision and decision-making.
If you’re using game footage via Veo, Trace, or something similar, focus on moments where you’re clearly involved in the action rather than just running in the background.
For ID camps and showcase tournaments, ask someone to film specifically for your highlight reel. Having dedicated footage often produces better angles and clarity than relying solely on team video.
Distribution Strategy
Upload your video to YouTube as “Unlisted” (viewable only with the link) or “Public” (this is suggested) if you want it searchable.
Include the link in every email to college coaches and add it to your recruiting profile on platforms coaches actually use.
Next Steps
Remember, your highlight video is just one piece of the college soccer recruiting puzzle. It should complement strong academics, NCAA eligibility requirements, and genuine interest in the programs you’re targeting.
The best highlight videos tell a clear story about who you are as a player. Make it easy for coaches to see your potential.
You’re video isn’t really to get you an offer. The next logical step in the process is to have a convo with a coach.
A good video will get you in the door (if a coach likes what they see)!
